History of the Award

Dia dhuit,

Micheál O’Loingsigh was born in the Bronx, New York in 1931 and returned to Ireland when his father bought a farm in Berrings, Co. Cork, circa 1937. Though they settled and farmed in Berrings, he people were from Derrynasaggart and Clonkeen and his connection to this gealtacht area was strong. He attended De La Salle college in Ballyvourney where his love of the Irish language was nurtured and after his third level education in U.C.C. he became a secondary school teacher in Irish and History. After several years teaching, he became a Primary School’s Inspector and was relocated to Abbeyfeale in West Limerick and then Ennis, Co. Clare. His passion for place, history, language and sense of one’s self never waned until his death in February 2022.
